Stop Spewing Carbon

Dear Friends

The U.S. Senate will be acting soon on proposed laws to give biomass plants more tax credits.  Members of our coalition met with the Office of Senator Baucus, Chair of the Senate Finance Commitee, last week and we need you to follow up with a call and email to his office to say no tax credits for biomass burning. Please use the link below to email Senator Baucus, the ranking Republican on the committee, Senator Chuck Grassley, and the Senators from your state.

Let Congress know that biomass plants pose an undue risk to public health and the environment, and promoting these incinerators with public subsidies on the false claim that they produce "green" electricity is indefensible public policy. Current research, data from company permits and proposals, environmental impact reports, and government analyses show that for several key pollutants (notably CO2, NOx and particulates) biomass burning is "dirty energy" - worse than coal - and not clean energy" as the industry claims.  The Massachusetts Medical Society, the Florida Medical Society, and the American Lung Association of New England oppose biomass power plants because they present an unacceptable risk to public health.

Please call Senator Baucus at 202-224-2651 and email your Senators to ask for a NO vote on new or extended tax credits for burning biomass to make electricity.

We think that at a time when President Obama wants to freeze domestic spending we shouldn't be giving tax breaks to incinerators that will drive up health care costs for millions of Americans, and pollute our environment. Ending subsidies for incinerators falsely claiming to be clean energy is a good place to start cleaning up the federal budget deficit.

Please urge Congress to stand with the interests of the people they represent and vote NO on all tax credits for biomass burning.

Thanks for taking action.

Sincerely,
Meg Sheehan and the Stop Spewing Carbon Campaign
