Three-fifths of Americans oppose opening ANWR to oil drilling, according to 1,000 potential voters polled by The Wilderness Society and the Alaska Wilderness League.

Conservatives Oppose Drilling
A poll conducted February 13, 2001 by Oliver North of his listeners--a demographic that is decidedly conservative--showed that even this conservative group does not support drilling the ANWR. What the poll said:
"In response to record oil prices, the Bush administration and Interior Secretary Gail Norton have advocated drilling within the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge. Do you think:
- Increased oil drilling in the U.S., especially in ANWR, is environmentally irresponsible and a bad idea: 68% agreed.
- This is a common sense answer to the energy shortage? 18% agreed."
Little Proof Americans Support Drilling
The only group that seems to be claiming that drilling is a good idea at all is an industry-front-group in Alaska working hard to spread half-truths and misinformation about drilling in the ANWR. (See our action alert for "anwr.org".)
The ridiculous thing is that the poll that they are citing is too small to be accurate, and even then, it doesn't really say that Americans support drilling the ANWR.
The Christian Science Monitor poll cited has a number of problems.
First, it only polled 803 people, a sample embarrassingly small to be called a sample of "the American public."
Furthermore, those polled say that long before we open anything, they support outlawing SUV's that guzzle gas, and also would support investment in non-petroleum technologies before they would support drilling the ANWR. If "anwr.org" is really trying to represent "the American public" why isn't there any information about these two things on their site?

WASHINGTON (Tribune Media Services) -- How many ways did George Bush find to destroy the environment today?
Chainsaw in hand, Bush has rolled back virtually every environmental regulation issued by Bill Clinton in his final months in office -- and turned environmental decision-making over to the major polluters. Whatever the logging and mining companies want, the logging and mining companies get.
In barely 60 days, Bush has attacked clean air, clean water, national forests and federally protected lands. And he hasn't even started on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge yet. This guy makes Ronald Reagan look like John Muir.

Energy Secretary Misses the Point
In an interview with CNN on April1, 2001, Energy Secretary Abraham missed the point completely when he cited a poll to support his plan to drill the ANWR.
The poll said that "Americans believe there are environmental problems, including global warming, according to the poll. Of those polled, 69 percent said the government gives in to businesses on environmental issues; that compares with 79 percent in 1989."
