Debunking the Lies About Oil Extraction in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
|
It seems you can't go a day without hearing "energy crisis" or "national security risk." And Bush is happy to keep repeating that the ANWR is a "viable solution." But these myths and short soundbites ARE LIES--that leave us poorly informed about the reality of the motivations and effects of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
The reality: Drilling in the ANWR will not relieve the energy crisis, and has no benefits to anyone outside the oil industry.
The Myths: The oil industry and those they have helped elect are working overtime to try and sway public opinion to support Bush's plan.
Every single argument that supports drilling in the ANWR falls apart when examined more closely.
So pick any myth from the list below--you've probably heard a few of them already--and see why it's just an excuse to rape your natural heritage.
Myths about drilling in the ANWR:
WRONG"We need to drill the ANWR to lower the price of gas."
WRONG"Oil drilling has become environmentally friendly."
WRONG"The Caribou will not be harmed."
WRONG"We need to drill the ANWR because of an economic national security risk."
WRONG"We need to drill the ANWR because of a military national security risk."
WRONG"The State of Alaska and the Alaskan people support drilling."
WRONG"The native peoples of Alaska support drilling."
WRONG"The American public supports drilling the ANWR"
WRONG"The coastal plain is already closed to oil and gas development."
WRONG"Drilling won't make it less of a refuge."
